Alicudi

Alicudi: Alicudi is the island of silence, open horizons, and the sea. It’s not for everyone, but it stays in your heart. Very few inhabitants, few structures. But it has a remote and wild charm. It seems frozen in time. However, it’s the ideal place to retreat for a different kind of vacation, a different life. What to do in Alicudi? Take a swim in a clear sea that’s never crowded, even in August, or go for a walk/climb along its mule tracks. There are no roads, only mule tracks with stone steps, but at the top, seeing the landscape from above, you feel like you have the world at your feet. There are no cars, scooters, or bikes; the only means of transport is the donkey. The island’s alleys are not lit; at night, people move along the silent mule tracks with torches. There’s only one grocery store and two restaurants. However, you can dine at the islanders’ homes, who take turns cooking for their guests some evenings of the week, opening their homes and verandas. Finding yourself seated at a table with strangers, often from distant realities, is fascinating. You discuss everything… daily life, travels, faraway places, often the desire for a slower and more authentic life. It’s an unmissable experience. On land, day trips are possible, the most challenging of which leads to the highest point, Piano filo dell’Arpa (about 2-3 hours from the port). The circumnavigation of the island is also interesting, starting from the port and heading west towards Punta Bazzina, an area where snorkeling and easy diving are possible. You then double Punta Rossa, characterized by a thin alternation of thin lava columns, called Fili, and Sciare, large valleys of lava debris. Further on, you encounter Scoglio Galera, whose waters are rich in marine flora and fauna, and subsequently, the valley of Sciara dell’Arpa that starts from the mountain. You reach Punta Roccazza, and from here on, the typical terraces of the island are appreciable. Then you reach Grotta della Palumba and finally the old Scalo and the Perciatu, a natural rock arch.
